Western and Arab envoys have met with a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood in jail as part of purported efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in the country.
Citing an informed source, Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported on Monday that the foreign delegates held a one-hour overnight meeting with Khairat El-Shater.
The report added that the envoys had received permission from the prosecutor general to visit Shater in a bid to mediate an end to Egypt’s crisis.
No further details have been reported on the meeting.
Egypt’s Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper also said that US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and European Union envoy Bernardino Leon were among the foreign visitors.
Reports say Shater told the envoys that his precondition for talks with them is the presence of ousted President Mohamed Morsi as “the legitimate president” of Egypt.
Shater was arrested on charges of inciting violence nearly a month ago.
The visit comes as supporters of Morsi remain camped out in two major cross-roads in Cairo, demanding his return to power.
The National Defense Council has warned protesters against the continuation of the sit-ins.
