Good show mates, Damn good show...!!!
The outgoing prime minister Kevin Rudd resigned the Labour leadership as he conceded defeat before votes had been fully counted on Saturday night.
Mr Abbott, an Oxford-educated father of three, delivered a solemn and restrained victory speech to a cheering crowd in Sydney, declaring that
"Australia is under new management and once again open for business."
"I thank you, the people of Australia, who have just given me the greatest honour and the heaviest responsibility," he said.
A fitness fanatic, before he voted on Saturday, he expressed regret that he had not been able to surf – and he says he will start his first day as prime minister by bike-riding with "mates".
"You will be pleased to know I am in a suit not in budgie smugglers [swimming costumes]," he told Channel Nine. "I wish I was out in the waves. It is a nice swell for an elderly long boarder."
